Changing the "Natural Born" requirement for President
There have been 3 assaults on the Presidential election process outlined in the Constitution in recent years.
The one that got the most press was to repeal the 2 Term limit on president. It was first talked about during Reagan, and then again during Clinton. In both cases, the “other” side quickly shot it down.
The second is the “natural born” language. Most recently there was a move by Republicans to change that so Arnold S. could run for president. At one point the language was modified without an amendment to allow Service Members born overseas while their parents were on active duty, the ability to run for president. McCain was the most recent beneficiary of this effort.
You really want your leadership to have grown up in your country. Remember that two of the worse dictators in the 20th century were NOT from the country they led into perdition. Adolf Hitler was an Austrian who moved to Germany. Joseph Stalin was a Georgian who moved to Russia during the revolution. You would hope that a President would have 35 years plus experience living in our country, altho BHO is trying to prove that the natural born citizen rule is superfluous.
The Third is giving the electoral votes to the winner of the gross popular vote. Delaware and other “blue” states have tried to pass this with varying success. Most people realize that this is an open invitation to pack the ballot boxes in the cities, leading to another election where someone goes to bed losing, but overnight millions of votes are suddenly found in a closet – the “Landslide Lyndon” syndrome. (Look up Archer Parr and Duke of Duval – Lyndon was losing at midnight, but they found enough votes overnight to make him a congressman in his first election.)
In all 3 cases, cooler heads have prevailed. In today’s media-ocracy, a president who could serve more than 2 terms could become a defacto “dictator for life” once he had 8 years to perfect his (or her) message to the “downtrodden.” We are already seeing the results of members of Congress who have been in their position for so long, they think they know everything, and are trying to run everything.
The big issue right now is carving up the congressional maps so that there are a certain number of “black” districts and a certain number of “brown” districts. Maybe we should just run a program that draws lines based on zip codes that balances the population in each election district – regardless of race, color, creed, or sexual orientation.
Imagine, a congress that represented America as a whole and not some balkanized group.
